Transfer news, rumors: Arsenal, Willian reach three-year contract; Matuidi leaves Juventus for Inter MiamiAugust 14, 2020
The Premier League season is over, but transfer rumors are heating up for some of the biggest clubs in England. The summer transfer window is in full swing after the unique 2019-20 domestic season that was halted for three months due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Premier League’s 2020-21 season is set to begin on Sept. 12, and teams are busy trying to retool their rosters before then.
Here are some of the biggest rumors to watch:Arsenal announce Willian signing
Arsenal officially announced the signing of Brazilian winger Willian on Friday. The 32-year-old switched London clubs on a free transfer after contract talks with the Blues broke down shortly after the FA Cup. Willian posted a farewell to Chelsea on social media last week.
Here’s his new manager Mikel Arteta on the signing: “I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us. We have been monitoring him for the past few months, we had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions, [and] he is a player that gives us a lot of versatility, he can play in three or four different positions.
“He has the experience of everything in the football world but to still have the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs. I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come.”
Willian had been with Chelsea since the 2013-14 season and made 29 starts in the Premier League this season. He’ll now lose the ability to play in the Champions League next season in exchange for the Europa League where Arsenal currently reside after winning the FA Cup. Chelsea already has bolstered its attack by signing Timo Werner and the Blues are also reportedly interested in Kai Havertz. American Christian Pulisic has also broken out since play resumed in June, though he will be unavailable for the start of the 2020-21 Premier League season due to injury.Blaise Matuidi joins Inter Miami
The French midfielder and 2018 World Cup winner was announced by Inter Miami CF on Thursday on a free transfer and as a Targeted Allocation Money deal, which means he will not count as one of Miami’s three Designated Players. Miami still has a spot leftover for a Designated Player deal.
The 33-year-old leaves Juventus after winning Serie A but falling short to Lyon in the round of 16 of the Champions League. He also spent six seasons at Paris Saint-Germain where he racked up 16 titles, including four Ligue 1 trophies. Aubameyang set for Arsenal stay
Arsenal star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on the verge of signing a contract extension with Arsenal, according to ESPN. Fresh off scoring two goals in the FA Cup final win over Chelsea, the Gabon international appears to have decided against a move away from the Emirates with teams like Real Madrid reportedly interested. The contract would tie him to the club until 2023 with confirmation coming potentially next week.
Since joining from Dortmund, he’s scored 70 goals in 109 matches. Sancho likely joining Man United
The Red Devils appear to be on the doorstep for a deal to land Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho. The 20-year-old is confident he will be a Manchester United player by the end of the week, per a report from The Independent. Fabrizio Romano of Sky Sports adds that United is looking to give Sancho a deal that runs through the 2024-25 season. It appeared as if the deadline to get a deal done would be before Dortmund departs for Switzerland next week for preseason, but now Ruhr Nachrichten says the deadline will be extended to Aug. 20.
Sancho has been highly productive in his last two seasons at Dortmund. He scored 17 goals and notched 16 assists in 32 games this season in the Bundesliga and added another two goals and two assists in eight Champions League matches.
