Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is thrilled Manchester United supporters are optimistic about a championship challenge as they prepare for their most important week in the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season.

United have not been involved in a title tilt well into January since they last won the league in 2013 and they will go top outright if they collect just a point in their game in hand at Burnley on Tuesday.

Solskjaer’s side then travel to current leaders Liverpool on Sunday and the scene of their last domestic away defeat on January 19 of last year.

United have the same amount of points as Liverpool, top on goal difference, having trailed their rivals by 30 points nearly a year ago.

“I think it’s great that our fans are excited and that they’re happy with where we are at and that we have this little sense of excitement,” Solskjaer said.

“But then we’re not even halfway through the season so, of course, every game against Burnley, every game against Liverpool matters a lot anyway. For me, all my eyes are on Tuesday and then let’s see where we’re at after that one.

“We’re not even halfway through the season yet and every game in the Premier League is a challenge, is a test, every game is a different test.

“Watford, they gave us a test, Burnley is one test, Liverpool is another, then you go to Fulham, which is a different test again. No one will remember how the league table looked like on January 12 in 2021.

“We have good momentum, we started well again after the disappointment against City, so we bounced back really well with a win and, of course, we want to build momentum again.

“If we can get a win on Tuesday then, when you win two games on the bounce again, you can go into the next game confident. Every game in the Premier League is a chance to build more confidence.
