Manchester United were quick to send their condolensces to Pep Guardiola after Manchester City announced the Spaniard’s mother, Dolors Sala, had passed away at the age of 82 after contracting coronavirus.

‘The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother Dolors Sala Carrió in Manresa, Barcelona after contracting Corona Virus. She was 82-years-old ,’ a statement read.

‘Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.’

Guardiola recently returned to Spain after donating £920,000 (€1million) to help provide medical equipment for the country, which has the second most cases in the world.

And, after City confirmed the sad news, rivals United extended their deepest sympathies to prove there are more important things than football.

‘Everyone at Manchester United is saddened to hear this terrible news,’ a statement read.

‘We send our heartfelt condolences to Pep and his family’.

Dolors Sala is survived by husband Valenti and their four children, with Pep having two older sisters and a younger brother, Pere, who is a football agent.

Guardiola recently sent a video message to supporters asking them to stay at home and revealing that he missed football.

We miss football. We miss the life that we had a few days ago but now is the time to listen, to follow our scientists, doctors and nurses
