Claudio Ranieri has urged his team to maintain their composure after a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace sent Leicester City eight points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League.
Riyad Mahrez’s goal in the first half gave City all three points, and although Tottenham Hotspur can close the gap at the top on Sunday, the Foxes have put themselves in a fantastic position heading into the final seven fixtures.
It was a battle at Selhurst Park, with the hosts fighting hard to end a run of 12 league games without a win, and despite Damien Delaney hitting the crossbar in stoppage time, it was the Foxes who had the better of the chances over the 90 minutes.
Ranieri told Foxes Player HD: “It was a very difficult match but I think we deserved to win. We created three good chances and they had the one just at the end when they hit the crossbar.
“I’m happy because all the team worked so well.”
The goal saw Jamie Vardy pull the ball back brilliantly for an arriving Mahrez just six yards out, and the Algerian made no mistake to chalk up his 15th Premier League goal of the campaign.
Understandably, the manager was delighted but was keen to urge caution given that there are still plenty of points to play for between now and the end of the season.
“What we can say about Mahrez,” he added. “We’ve said everything but it’s important that he continues this way.
“It’s a fantastic position but we have to remain calm because we’ve not achieved anything yet.
“At the beginning [of the season] the clean sheet was difficult [to achieve for us] and I offered pizza. Maybe they didn’t like pizza but then we are good.
“The fans can continue to dream but we have to be focused on our match.
“I’m very happy with the players but we must be calm with our feet on the ground.”
