Jose Mourinho Stifling Rooney’s Midfield Evolution
Former Valencia manager and popular Television pundit Gary Neville has claimed that Man United manager Jose Mourinho is stunting Wayne Rooney’s evolution into a proper midfielder. He was deployed as a CM towards the end of last season by LvG and Roy Hodgson during the Euros. But new manager Mourinho has insisted that he sees Rooney as a forward or a No.10 at most. Neville felt that the move is restricting Rooney’s evolution into a central midfielder – “He’s been moved around three positions in the last two to three years he now needs to settle into that latter phase of his career position. He will continue to come deeper, it’s where he’s comfortable..”
Rooney himself said that he has envisioned himself playing in the midfield like Scholes and Gerrard but Mourinho doesn’t seem to think so. Rooney’s progression this season would surely be intriguing.
