Former FIFA President Passes Away
Former FIFA President and IOC member Joao Havelange has died at the age of 100. The Brazilian took charge of FIFA in 1974 and continued till 1998. During his tenure, World Cups were held and he is seen as the man behind the World Cup’s expansion from 16 to 32 teams. Havelange is also credited for the launch of several tournaments including the world championships at Under-17 and Under-20 level, the FIFA Confederations Cup and Fifa Women’s World Cup. However, his career was also marred with controversies over bribery allegations.
