Brentford have announced the signing of Frank Onyeka from Danish club FC Midtjylland for £9million.

Onyeka has joined the Premier League new boys on a five-year contract.

He made 123 appearances, scoring 17 and assisting ten for Midtjylland, where Brentford’s owner Matthew Benham has the majority shareholding.

The midfielder made his Nigeria debut in October last year in a 1-0 loss to Algeria.

He helped his former club to the Danish title in the 2017/18 season as well as a league and cup double in the 2019/20 campaign. He also has Champions League and Europa League experience.

Brentford’s head coach Thomas Frank told the club’s official website: “I am looking forward to getting Frank in the building. We think he is a strong addition to the squad, and we are looking forward to working with him. He is a very dynamic player.

“Frank plays as an eight in our system, he is very good at getting from box to box and will be valuable to us when we don’t have the ball.

“He has come from the Danish league and was one of the best midfield players in that league, we think he has the potential to develop further.

“All the coaches here are looking forward to working with Frank and pushing him to a higher level.”

The club’s director of football Rasmus Ankersen also said: “Frank Onyeka is a player we, for obvious reasons, know very well.

“Over the last two years he has grown to become the dominant midfielder in the Danish league and his performances in the Champions League last season convinced us that he is ready for the Premier League.

“With his pace, power and ability to win the ball I am sure Frank will be a great addition to the Brentford squad.”

Elsewhere, the Bees are strongly linked with Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer, and could announce the signing soon.

The centre-back has expressed his desire to leave Celtic Park this summer and both Newcastle United and Norwich City have shown interest in him. Ajer is entering the final year of his contract after five years at the Glasgow club.

He has made 176 appearances for Celtic, scoring seven and assisting seven.
